Chalila Narada muni, uthila vinara dhvani
Pani pada na chaloye ara
Jaite na path dekhe, premajole ankhi jhanpe
tala mala jeno matoyara
Playing upon his vina, Narada muni travelled on. He could no longer move his hands or feet. His eyes were filled with tears of prema and he could no longer see his way. Being intoxicated with Gauranga consciousness, he trembled and stumbled like a drunkard.
One intoxicated with Gauranga consciousness constantly prays :
kandarpad api sundarah surasarit purad aho pavanah
sitamsor api shitalah sumadhuroh madhvika sarad api
data kalpa mahiruhad api maha snigdho jananya api
premna Gaura harih kada nu hrdi me dhyatuh padah dhasyati
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 72)
When will Lord Gaurahari, who is unlimitedly more beautiful than Cupid, infinitely more purifying than the celestial Ganges, more soothing than millions of moons, sweeter than madhavika nectar, more charitable and generous than the celestial desire creepers, and more affectionate than millions of mothers , appear in my meditation and lovingly place His lotus feet upon my heart ?
Pada dui chari jai, punah pare sei thhain
Hari nama adha adha bole
Aneka shakati uthhi, dhariya dharani koti
Nadi bahe nayanera jole
After taking a few steps forward, he would fall back where he had started. In a voice choked with ecstasy, he chanted the holy names of Lord Hari. After collapsing on the ground, he slowly picked himself up with great difficulty. Rivers of tears streamed from his eyes.
Kshane maha unmada, huhunkara simhanada
Gaura rupa hridoye dheyan
Bahya nahi antare, na chine apana pore
Sabe ek Gaura-geyan
At times Narada ,contemplating upon the form of Lord Gauranga in his heart, behaved like a madman and roared loudly like a lion. He had no external consciousness. Neither was he able to recognize himself from the others. He was intoxicated with Gauranga consciousness.
Koti robi tyejah yeno, angera kirana heno
Narada chalila antarikhhe
Uttarila sei thham, yatha prabhu Balarama
Chamaka lagila svetadvipe
The form of Lord Gauranga was more brilliant than millions of suns. Meditating upon Him, Narada travelled through outer space. He was wonderstruck when he descended at Svetadvipa, the abode of Lord Balarama.
Puri parisare rahi, chamaki choudike chahi
Lakh lakh himkara dyuti
Bayu bahe manda manda, divya sukusuma gandha
Pratidvare lambe gajamati
There he gazed at the wonderful city effulgent with the rays of millions of moons. Gentle breeze carrying the sweet fragrance of celestial flowers blew. Strands of pearls hung across every doorway.
Sattvaguna sarvalok, nahi jvara mrityu shok
Sarvajana sabhakara bandhu
Jokhon je dekhi dithhi, sei sarvajana mithi
Each and every person over there was in the mode of goodness. There was no old age or death. Everyone was everyone else’s friend.Everyone was sweet and charming. The presence of Lord Balarama, the predominating deity of the milk ocean, was felt everywhere.
Dekhiya Narada muni, dhani dhani mone gani
Dhanya dhanya apnake mani
Trijagata nath swami, dekhiba Nayane ami
Kandiya pariba ei charane
Seeing all this, Narada muni considered himself very fortunate and thought, ‘Soon I shall see with my own eyes, the Lord of the three worlds. I shall fall upon His feet crying in ecstasy’.
Sei Balarama-moy yuge yuge sahay
Kari Krishna kare avatara
Khelay bibhida khela, ananta binod leela
Kari kare asura samhara
(Narada continued) ‘Yuga after yuga, Lord Balaram descends to the earth and assists Lord Krishna in His pastimes. He performs limitless sporting and pleasure pastimes, and kills a host of demons’.
Sei prabhu Balarama, nija angshe teen thham
Rahi kare Krishnera piriti
Adya madhya ara anta, yara angsha ananta
Ek phanay dhari rahe kshiti
(Narada continued) ‘That same Lord Balarama, expands Himself and manifesting His plenary portions ,He resides in three spiritual abodes, in order to render loving devotional service unto Krishna. He is the beginning, He is the middle and He is the end.In His expansion as Ananta sesha, He holds the bhumandala, in one of His many hoods’.
Apane isvara haiya, svetadvipa majhe rainya
Vilasa kare nana range
Sarvapari parinama, sei Mahaprabhu thham
Seva kare aparupa range
(Narada continued) ‘He is the supreme controller, enjoying several blissful pastimes, while residing at Svetadvipa. In the highest realm (Navadvipa), He serves Mahaprabhu with a wonderful happiness’.
Lord Balarama descends as lord Nityananda to assist Mahaprabhu in His magnanimous pastimes. His magnanimous , unique qualities are simply beyond human definition. How can we possibly comprehend the activities of the first expansion of the Supreme Lord , who leaving behind all His wealth, fame and position in Svetadvipa, descended to this world and danced around like a madman crying ‘Gauranga, Gauranga’ in utter ecstasy.Holding straws between His teeth, begging from door to door and urging people to chant, He sanctified mother earth by rolling over her dusty grounds, and bathing His beautiful body with impurities.
Being intoxicated with divine love, He had bestowed the supreme mercy of pure devotional service ,even upon those petty drunkards (Jagai and Madhai) who had hurled broken pots at Him and caused Him to bleed.
Being completely devoid of external consciousness, Lord Nitai sometimes roamed naked at Srivasa angana, or threw food around like a little baby.
May the lotus feet of Lord Nitai, the saviour of the fallen souls, be the constant object of our meditation.
Gamanera kale chhatra, basite asana vastra
Sayanera kaale haya sajya
Proloyera se batapatra, maharane divya astra
Nanarupe kare paricharja
(Narada continued) ‘When the Supreme Lord walks, Balarama becomes His umbrella. When He sits, He becomes His asana. During cosmic annihilation, Lord Balarama serves as a banyan leaf to carry baby Krishna. When the Lord fights, He manifests into His divine weapons. In so many ways He expertly serves the supreme Lord’.
Ek angshe seva kare , ara angshe Mahi dhare
Heno prabhu Balarama mor
Trijagata adhiraja, dekhibo Kshirod-majh
Prabhu ajna kariba gochara
(Narada continued) ‘In one expansion He serves the supreme Lord, and in the other (as Ananta sesha) He supports the bhumandala. This is my Lord Balarama.Soon I shall see Him, who is the master of the three worlds, in the middle of the milk ocean.I shall relate to Him the order of Lord Gauranga’.
Ei dui prabhumatra, yeno raja mahapatra
Prithivi paloye ek yukti
Ara yata rudra vamsa, seho yar angshansha
Avatara kariben kshiti
(Narada continued) ‘ These two Lords, Lord Krishna and Balarama, are just like the king and His minister. With one will, they maintain this world together. These two Lords, along with Lord Shiva and his expansions, shall incarnate upon the earth’.
Heno manah-katha-rase ,muni bhelo parabashe
Puri praveshila mahanande
Dekhi trijagatanatha, sab parishada sath
Being absorbed in these nectarian thoughts, Narada muni entered the palace in a very joyful mood. Over there he saw the wonderful form of Lord Balarama, the Lord of the three worlds, along with His intimate associates.
Ankura parvata yeno, basi sveta simhasana
Amrita madhura lahu hashe
Rata utpala ankhi, dhulu dhulu heno dekhi
Adhavani mukhete nikashe
Lord Balarama sat on a white throne and appeared just like a snow covered mountain peak. His gentle smile was just like a sweet nectar, His eyes were red like lotus, His glance was sleepy as if in intoxication. He spoke in a faltering voice.
Taraka bhromora adha, achhadila taar sath
Adha udash dui ankhi
Mani mukta prabala, divyaratnamoy haar
Anga alankare nahi lakhi
The pupils of His half closed indifferent eyes, resembled black bees. He wore jewelled necklaces adorned with celestial gems, pearls and ruby. One could not see all the ornaments of His body.
Aalish-baalish kare , bamakara kari shire
Dahine Revati kara dhare
Revati tambula kare , dei prabhu adhare
Anurage bayana nehare
Leaning against a bolster, Lord Balarama held up His head with His left hand and held Revati devi with His right hand.Revati devi prepared tambula and put it in the Lord’s mouth. She lovingly gazed at Him.
Jahnava Mata in Lord Nityananda’s pastimes was the incarnation of Revati devi.
Anuchari-chari pashe, chamara dhulaya hashe
Kankana-kinkini dhvani shuni
Keho vina benu baay, keho ba sangeet gaay
Taal sanche parama Ramani
His maidservants surrounded Him in all directions and waved Chamara to fan the divine couple. They smiled gently. Their bangles and waist bells chimed melodiously. Some of them played vina or flute, some engaged in singing songs while some beautiful girls gracefully played upon drums.
Tahara antara yata, anugata shata shata
Yar yei nija karme niyajita
Aichhana samaye muni, karila vinara dhvani
Thakura dekhila achambita
In that assembly were hundreds and hundreds of followers, all engaged in their respective services. At that time, Narada muni sounded upon his vina causing Lord Balarama to look at him surprised.
Bihavala Narada muni, talamala pare bhumi
Thakura tuliya nila kole
Chiradina anurage, dekhila mo mahabhage
Tushila shitala maha bole
Being intoxicated with ecstatic emotions, Narada muni trembled and fell upon the ground. Lord Balarama raised him upon His lap. The Lord gazed at fortunate Narada with eternal love and pacified him with affectionate words.
Hashi sambhasane pahun, kaha kotha haite tuhun
Rahasya kahibe heno bashi
Kahana kemon kaaj, shunite hridoye majh
Ananda uthoye rashi rashi
Lord Balarama smiled and asked Narada, ‘Please tell where are you coming from ? Please tell Me the secrets. Please reveal why you have come here. My heart ,which is flooded with bliss, awaits your answers’.
Sambhrame kahoye muni, ki kahite jani ami
Tumi prabhu sarva antaryami
ye kichu kahite jani, sei katha anumani
Ye jujaya kara prabhu tumi
Narada muni respectfully replied,’ what can I say ? You are the supersoul in everyone’s heart. You are already aware of whatever I want to say. Please do as You desire’.
Kali papamaya yuge, na dekhi nistara loke
Daya upajila prabhu chite
Paliba bhakata-jana, ara dharma samsthapana
Janama lobhiba prithivite
(Narada continued) ‘The age of kali is full of sins. Seeing no other means of deliverance for the suffering people, compassion arose within the Lord’s heart. He has decided to take birth upon the earth ,to protect His devotees and re-establish religious principles’.
Adharma vinash kaje, ara kiba dharma achhe
Heno bujhi akara ingite
Ajna dila amare, ghosana dibar tore
Shuni lok bhelo anandite
(Narada continued) ‘What is the greater form of religion other than destroying irreligion ? This is what I understood from His hints. He ordered Me to announce this to You. Hearing this message ,everyone became joyful’.
Radhabhava antare, Radhavarna bahire
Antarbahya Radhamaya haiya
Sange sakha sakhi-vrinda, ara bhakta ananta
Brajabhave akhila mataiya
(Narada continued) ‘Feeling the mood of Radharani inside, and accepting the complexion of Radharani outside, becoming like Radha both on the inside and outside, the Lord shall appear on the earth. He would be accompanied by His male and female associates and innumerable devotees. He would flood the entire world with the mood of Vrindavana’.
Please refer to the purport of the verses 2.299-300
Sangopango parishade, jonmoho prithivite
Svanama dharoho ‘Nityananda’
Tor agochor nahe, tanr marma karmadehe
Kahila ye ajna Gaurachandra
(Narada continued) ‘Being accompanied by associates and confidential companions, You shall appear upon the earth. You shall accept the name “Nityananda”. Nothing of this is unknown to You. You know the essence and the details of the instructions provided by Lord Gauranga’.
Shuni Balarama Raya, anande choudike chay
atta atta hashe uchanade
Ghana ghana huhunkara, prakashaye chamatkara
Apana pashare prema-anande
Hearing these words, Lord Balarama, blissfully looked all around Him. He began laughing out loud. He roared repeatedly, and was wonderful to behold. He completely forgot Himself in loving ecstasy.
Ajna dila nija-jane, prithivi kara gamane
Prabhu ajna palibare tore
Choloho Narada tumi, janama lobhiba ami
Agochara kariba gochore
Lord Balarama , following the instructions of Lord Gauranga, ordered His own associates, to descend onto the earth. He said, ‘Narada, go to the earth; I shall also take birth soon. I shall reveal the unknown’.
This ‘unknown’, spoken about in this verse, is the science of pure devotional service that was largely unknown before the advent of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. That is why Srila vasudeva Ghosh sings :
madhura vrinda, vipina-madhuri,
pravesa chaturi sar
baraja yuvati, bhavera bhakati,
shakati hoito kar
Who else could have had the power to render ecstatic devotional service that follows in the footsteps of the damsels of Vraja? Indeed, the clever expertise of the Vraja-gopis is a prerequisite for entering the supremely sweet forest of Vrindavana.
Lord Balarama or Nityananda Prabhu is key to obtaining the mercy of Lord Gauranga.Anyone who is loved by Lord Nitai becomes atonce exceedingly dear to Lord Gaurahari. Nityananda Prabhu urges everyone :
Chaitanya seva, chaitanya gao,
lao chaitanya nama
Chaitanye ye bhakti kare, sei mora prana
(Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya 1.29)
Nityananda Prabhu requested everyone to serve Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, chant His glories and utter His name. Nityananda Prabhu claimed that one who loves and worships Lord Chaitanya becomes His very life and soul.
In Sri Chaitanya Bhagavata as well, it has been mentioned how Nityananda Prabhu always chants the glories and blissful pastimes of Lord Gauranga and makes all of His associates and followers do the same as well.
Nirabadhi sri Krishna Chaitanya sankirtana
Karayen karen laiya bhaktagana
(Chaitanya Bhagavata 3.5.329)
Aichhana amrita katha, shuno Gaura guna gatha
Sabjana kara avadhane
Sab-avatara-sar , Kali Gaura avatara
Vichara koroho sabhe mone
Please hear such nectarian pastimes, laden with the qualities and virtues of Lord Gauranga. Please listen carefully everyone. Lord Gauranga, who incarnates in the age of kali, is the essence of all incarnations of the supreme. Please consider this in your heart.
Narada muni has also confirmed this same conclusion , as we have read before in this chapter-
Yata yata avatara saba haite sar
Kabhu nahi dekhi heno premar bhandar
Safal janam din, safal nayan
Ki dekhilun Gaura rupa , prasanna bayan
(Chaitanya Mangala , 2.121-122)
(Narada muni says) ‘Of all the Lord’s incarnations , Lord Gauranga is the best. I have never ever seen such a reservoir of pure ecstatic love. My life has become successful, my eyes have borne fruit, as today I have been able to behold the beautiful form of Lord Gauranga with His pleasant, blissful, smiling face’.
Lord Jagannatha reveals the supreme position of Lord Chaitanya in the below verse as well:
Vaikuntha upari sthan, Goloka yahara nama
Sri Gaurasundara tahe raja
Lakhimi adika naari, eki Purusa Hari
Sukhomoy sakala paraja
(Chaitanya Mangala, 2.494)
(Jagannatha continued) ‘Goloka, which occupies the topmost position in Vaikuntha, is the place where Lord Gauranga is the king.Lakshmi and many other ladies reside there and serve Him. Lord Hari is the only enjoyer over there. All the residents of Goloka are full of bliss’.
Trina dhari dasharane, bolon mo kator mon-e
Gaura guna na kariho hela
Samsare na diya mati, kara Krishne piriti
Samsara torite ei bhela
Holding straws between my teeth, and with a deep anguish within my heart, I beg you to not neglect the glories of Lord Gauranga. Do not fix your thoughts on this world, but fall in love with Lord Krishna. This is the way to raft this material ocean of birth and death.
The Navadvipa dham mahatmya states –
‘ara eka gudha katha suna sarva jana, kali jive yogya vastu Gaura leela dhana’
Please hear the most confidential secret. The most suitable thing for the conditioned souls in this age of Kali, is the supreme treasure of Lord Gauranga’s pastimes.
The land of Navadvipa, the place where Sri Chaitanya mahaprabhu eternally enjoys His magnanimous pastimes, is saturated with audarya (magnanimity). He is the saviour of the fallen souls; that is why He is also known as patita pavana.
Along with His associates, Sri Chaitanya had manifested the most blissful , heart rending pastimes that have been ever witnessed in human history. In fact, some of the eternal associates of the Lord have experienced a greater degree of transcendental ecstasy being part of the pastimes of Lord Chaitanya, as compared to being part of Sri Krishna’s vrindavana pastimes. Lord Gaurahari freely gives what no other incarnation of the Supreme Lord has ever given before – the ecstatic pure love of God. He does not consider one’s qualifications or background or pedigree before bestowing this supreme gift upon them, receiving which one achieves the ultimate perfection of his human life .He is the essence of all the other incarnations of the Supreme – ‘Avatara sar Gaura avatara’.
Kabhu nahi haya yei, Gaura avatara sei
Haiba parama parakash
Nirjive jibana pabe, andhe patha vicharibe
Guna gaye e Locana das
What never happens, and is exceedingly rare, is the incarnation of Lord Gauranga. The Lord shall manifest His pastimes in this world. The lifeless shall regain their lives, and the blind shall now be able to determine their paths. I, Locana das, sing His glories.
This is the prayer of those who have realized that Gauranga prema(love) is the essence of bhakti (devotional science) –
Vaso me varam astu hora dahana jvalavali panjare
Sri Chaitanya padaravinda vimukhair na kutrachit sangamah
Vaikunthadi padam svayam ca militam no me mano lipsate
Padambhoja rajas chata yadi manak gaurasya no rasyate
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 65)
Let me live in the most terrible and the most dreadful burning cage of fire rather than associate with those who are averse to Lord Chaitanya’s lotus feet.My heart has no desire to achieve an eternal residence in Vaikuntha if for a single moment I cannot relish the pollen of the lotus feet of Lord Chaitanya.
