Eteka kohiya – iha na mane je jon
Chariyuge teen varna tahara bakhana
Kanti Krishna varna Krishna – dui haila ek
Ara dui yugera varna – iha nahi dekh

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘To explain it (the identity of Lord Gauranga) to those who yet do not understand, let me describe why only three colors of the Lord’s complexion has been mentioned (in Bhagavatam 10.8.13) for the four yugas. The grace and splendor(kanti) of Krishna is the same as His complexion (varna).A different color is not to be seen in these two yugas’.

Text 363-364
Kali ba Dvapara dui yuge ek varna
Dui yuge varna ek – ei tar marma
Satya, treta, Sveta, Rakta dui varna achhe
Kali Dvaparete ek Varna haila pachhe

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘In the ages of both Kali and Dvapara, the Supreme Lord’s incarnation has the same color. This is the essence of the explanation. In the yugas of Satya and Treta, the Lord’s incarnation has a whitish and a reddish complexion respectively. But in Kali and Dvapara, both of Lord’s incarnations have the same color’.

Text 365-366
Gargamunira bakye kene bolo kramabhanga
Kramabhanga nahe – shuno achhe boro ranga
Bhuta, bhavishya, bartaman kahibara tore
Teen kala kohe chariyugera bhitore

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Why do some say that there is a break in sequence in Gargamuni’s description ? Actually there is no break (in the sequence of colors mentioned by him). Please listen as there is a great delightful mystery to it’.

Text 367-368
Satya Treta bahi Dvapara bartaman
Dvaparete Krishna – avatara Krishna-nama
‘Idanim’ boliya tenhi bole Gargamuni
Bhuta-kala bhitore bhavishya-kala goni

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘When that verse was being spoken by Gargamuni, Satya and Treta yugas were in the past and Dvapara was in the present. In Dvapara, Krishna Himself advented to the earth and He bore the name “Krishna”. By uttering the word “idanim” (now) , Gargamuni had gone onto speak of pastimes that would be happening in the near future’.

Text 369-370
Bhavitavyata yahara achhe iha jani
Bhutera bhitore tar bhavishya bakhani
Bhavishyata arthe bhuta pramane pandita
Nischoyota achhe tar – ei to ingita

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Knowing the destiny, Gargamuni had described Lord krishna’s future while describing His past.A scholar uses the past to refer to the near future. The future has been hinted here in this verse spoken by Gargamuni (in shloka Srimad Bhagavatam – 10.8.13)’.

Purport –

Verse spoken by Gargamuni –

asan varnas trayo hy asya, grhnato nuyugam tanuh
suklo raktas tatha pita, idanim krishnatam gatah
(Srimad Bhagavatam – 10.8.13)

Gargamuni has explained that the Supreme Lord assumes suklo (white) complexion in satya yuga, rakta (reddish) complexion in treta, pita (yellow) in Kali yuga and Krishna (blackish) complexion in Dvapara. He has used the word ‘tatha’ to speak about an event that is about the happen in the future and he has used the word ‘idanim’ to refer to the events happening at that present point in time.

Text 371-372
Tathapi tahate ‘tatha’ shabda dila muni
Shuklo, rokto, bali ‘tatha’ ki kaaj kahini
‘Tatha’ shabde purba ukto shuklo, rokto yatha
Kaliyuge pitavarna haba Hari tatha

Translation-
(Brahma continued) ‘Here Gargamuni has used the word ‘tatha’ (in a similar way). Having already explained the white and the red incarnations of the Supreme Lord, why has Gargamuni gone onto utter the word ‘tatha’. The word ‘Tatha’ has been used to convey that just as the Lord had descended in a white and red incarnation before, similarly He would be appearing in a yellow complexion in the near future (in Kali)’.

Text 373-374
Ebe Dvapere ei Krishnatake gelo
Gargamuni chari yuge teen kala kahila
Amara vachana yeba na loy abagyate
Ki karone ‘tatha’ shabda kahe Bhagavate

Translation-
(Brahma continued) ‘In the age of Dvapara the Lord had appeared in a blackish complexion.Gargamuni has thus described the Lord’s incarnations in the four yugas and three phases of time – past, present and future. If someone does not accept my explanation then he should explain why Gargamuni has used the word ‘tatha’ in this verse (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.8.13)’.

Text 375-376
Eteka kohiye ami shuno mor bol
Kohoye Lochana – katha na theliyo mor
Ara aparupa shuno shlokera byakhyan
Eimatro byakhya iha parama proman

Translation-
Locana das says, please accept my statements as the truth and don’t ignore them. (Brahma continued) ‘Please hear another wonderful explanation of a verse. I am now going to explain it and it is the most conclusive evidence’.

Text 377-378
Ei to byakhyar achhe apurva purvapaksha
Yuga-avatara Krishna, e boro ashokya
Ara yugavatara, angsha kala likhi
Apanei Bhagavan Bhagavata sakshi

Translation-
(Brahma continued) ‘There is a need for explaining this as someone might question whether Krishna is only a yuga-avatara (one who incarnates in a particular yuga) and not the supreme Lord. The Bhagavatam explains that all the other incarnations of the Supreme is either a part or an expansion of Sri Krishna. Lord Krishna is however the Supreme personality of Godhead, and this verse in the Bhagavatam is the proof’.

Text 379
ete camsa-kalah pumsah kṛishnas tu bhagavan svayam
indrari-vyakulam lokam mridayanti yuge yuge
(Srimad Bhagavatam 1.3.28)

Translation –
‘All of the other incarnations are either plenary portions or portions of the plenary portions of the Supreme Lord, but Lord Sri Krishna is the original Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. All of them appear on planets whenever there is a disturbance created by the atheists. The Lord incarnates to protect the theists’.
(Srimad Bhagavatam 1.3.28)

Purport –
Similarly Lord Chaitanya is also not an incarnation of the Supreme or any plenary portion of the supreme. Lord Chaitanya is the Supreme Lord Himself who had descended in the age of kali to propagate the sankirtana yajna.

Yena Dvaperete Krishna , tena Gaurachandra
Kali Dvapara yuge e dui svatantra
Ei dui yuge ekapurna avatara
Vyasa kahilena udaharana ihara
(Chaitanya mangala, text 2.400-401)

The same person who appears as Krishna in Dvapara, appears as Lord Gauranga in Kali. Though they are the same, yet these two Lords, one appearing in kali and the other one in Dvapara ,they are different. These two yugas see the original Supreme Lord, with His complete full potencies, descend as avatars. Vyasa explained this with an example

Text 380-381
Yuga-avatara Krishna kahiba kemate
E vachana tabe kene kahe Bhagavate
Vrindavana-chandra yuga-avatara nohe
Purna Purnabrahma Krishna, Bhagavate kahe

Translation –
(Brahma continued)’How can I say that Lord Krishna is a yuga avatara ? Why is it said so in Srimad Bhagavatam ? Lord Krishna, the moon of Vrindavana, is not a mere yuga avatara. But according to the Bhagavatam, He is the complete and the original Supreme personality of Godhead’.

Text 382
Ei to karone kichhu kahi taha shuno
Avagya na kara keho ,kara avadhana

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘This is why now i shall speak something. Please do not neglect it but listen to it carefully’.

Text 383
asan varnas trayo hy asya, grhnato nuyugam tanuh
suklo raktas tatha pita, idanim krishnatam gatah
(Srimad Bhagavatam – 10.8.13)

Translation –
Your son Krishna appears as an incarnation in every millennium. In the past, He had assumed three different colors — white, red and yellow. While in this incarnation, He has appeared in a blackish color.
(Srimad Bhagavatam – 10.8.13)

Text 384-385
Gargamuni kahila gabhira boro bodhe
Kemone bujhiba iha amra abodhe
Buddhimana haya yadi jane bhaktajane
Budhiman lok taha koroye promane

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Gargamuni has spoken this verse with a great deal of realization, which is very difficult for us fools to understand. If one is an intelligent devotee,he understands these truths’.

Text 386-387
Chariyuge charivarna kahilena muni
Bhuta bhavisya, bartaman trikala kahini
Chariyuge teen kala kahibare chahe
Ei saba katha vyasa ek shloke kahe

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Gargamuni had talked about the four distinct complexions of the Lord’s incarnations in the four yugas. While saying so, the sage had talked about the events spanning across the three phases of time : past, future and present. Gargamuni had wanted to speak about the Lord’s incarnations in the four yugas spread across the three phases of time. Vyasadeva had summarised all of these in one verse’.

Text 388-389
Satya Treta dvapara ara yuga Kali
Sveta, Rakta, Pita, Krishna chari yuge bali
Chari yuge achhe chari kala haya yabe
Ara teen avatara krome haya tabe

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘In Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali yugas, the Supreme Lord appears as white, red, yellow and black colors respectively. The four yugas have four colors of the Lord. The three incarnations of the Lord descend in their respective order’.

Text 390-391
Tabe se kahila haya yathakrame katha
Yatha avatara katha anushare tatha
Eteka se kramabhanga heno shloke dekhe
‘Tatha’ shabde bhavisyakala Gargamuni lekhe

Translation –
In this way, the words are spoken by Gargamuni appear in their appropriate sequence as per the order in which the Lord’s incarnations descend onto the earth. One who still finds an interruption in the sequence of these incarnations within this verse, should refer to the word ‘tatha’ (in this way) mentioned by Gargamuni, by which he denotes that he is speaking about the future.

Text 392-393
Keba avatara ara chari varna kara
Keba avatari kiba vichara ihara
Apnehi Bhagavana janmi yaduvamse
Prithivite avatara kare ara angshe

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Who are the yuga-avatars ,who possess all these four colors ? Who is the source of all these incarnation ? – this we must discuss. The original supreme personality of Godhead appeared as Sri krishna in the Yadu dynasty. All of the other incarnations are His expansions’.

Text 394-395
Bisheshya bisheshan kari bakhanaha kene
Ei se sandheho ithe dvidha te karone
Yateka chou-yuga-tathe angsha avatara
Yuga anushare varna haya ta sabhara

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Why am i so concerned with describing the noun(avatari – Lord Krishna) and the adjective (avatara – yuga avatara). There are two reasons for this. The incarnations of the Supreme Lord that appear in the four yugas are His plenary portions. These yuga-avatars appear in certain specific colors in the appropriate yuga one after the other’.

Text 396-397
Dharmasansthapana adharma-vinash nimitte
Prati yuge angsha avatara haya tate
Apanei dvapare bhagavan Hari
Avatara siromani sabhara upari

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘To establish religious principles and to destroy irreligion, these plenary portions of the Supreme Lord descend in each yuga as yuga avataras. Hower in the age of Dvapara, Lord Hari (Krishna) Himself descended in His original form. He is the crest jewel of all avatars, and is the highest of all’.

Text 398-399
Ebe Krishnatake gela Gargamuni kahe
Syamasundara Krishna varna Krishna nahe
Prati Dvapere angsha Krishna nama varna
Tadrupata gela prabhu , ei shuno marma

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Gargamuni says that generally in Dvapara yuga, the incarnation of the Supreme Lord is as beautiful and dark complexioned as Krishna, but He is not the original form of Lord Krishna Himself. Although He also bears His name as ‘Krishna’ and a dark complexion,He is only a plenary portion of Krishna. Please hear the heart of this matter’.

Text 400-401
Yena Dvaperete Krishna , tena Gaurachandra
Kali Dvapara yuge e dui svatantra
Ei dui yuge ekapurna avatara
Vyasa kahilena udaharana ihara

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘The same person who appears as Krishna in Dvapara, appears as Lord Gauranga in Kali. Though they are the same, yet these two Lords, one appearing in kali and the other one in Dvapara ,they are different. These two yugas see the original Supreme Lord, with His complete full potencies, descend as avatars. Vyasa explained this with an example’.

Text 402-403
Tamaradhya tatha sambe grahisyami borong sada

Svagamoi Kalpitei-stvancha janan madvimukhan kuru
Mancha gopoye yena syat sristirebottarattara
(brihat sahasra nama stotra)

Translation –
I shall worship Sambhu and obtain the following benediction – he shall incarnate in the society of human beings (as Sankaracharya) in Dvapara and preach from imaginary religious scriptures. Thereby he shall confuse atheists and turn them away from worshipping the Supreme Lord. The worship of the Supreme Lord should be kept very confidential (and not practised popularly). This tradition should continue down the generations.
(brihat sahasra nama stotra)

Text 404
Ara kichu shuno Bhagavad Gita
Srimukhadita Prabhura nija katha

Translation –
(Brahma continued) Please listen to some verses from Bhagavad Gita. These words are spoken from the mouth of Lord Krishna Himself.

Text 405
paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca dushkritam
Dharma samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge
(Bhagavad Gita – 4.8)

Translation –
To deliver the pious , annihilate the miscreants, as well as to re-establish the principles of religion, I appear Myself ,millennium after millennium.
(Bhagavad Gita – 4.8)

Text 406-407
Sadhujana paritran dharma samsthapana
Adharma binash hetu kahila e marma
Yuge yuge janma lobhiye apani
Ei dui yuge matra apanei ami

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘The Supreme Lord spoke this to convey that He descends in order to deliver the pious, to re-establish religious principles, and to destroy irreligion. For this He takes birth millennium after millennium. Only in these two yugas (Dvapara and Kali), however, He Himself descends to earth’.

Purport –
Krishna and Lord Gauranga descend to this planet only once in day of Brahma. Brahma lives a life of one hundred years. But these hundred years are calculated based upon the timeline of his own planet, ie, brahmaloka. 1 day of brahma corresponds to a thousand cycle of four yugas (satya, treta, dvapara and kali) by our earthly calculations. So in effect Krishna and Gauranga descend to the earth only once in 8,600,000,000 earthly years. Krishna appears in the age of Dvapara to manifest His sweet pastimes of Vrindavana. In the immediately next yuga, ie in the age of Kali, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu manifests the Magnanimous pastimes of Navadvipa. So we can understand that the great Sankirtan Movement of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is a great gift to the world and is a very rare event.

Text 408-409
Ek yuga shabde kahi ara nama yuge
Bisheshana bisheshya kari bakhanoy loke
Yuga bisheshana yugera, tenhi yuga bali
Ek dvapara yuga , ara ek yuga kali

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘One “Yuga” word is spoken as a noun and the other one is spoken as an adjective. This is how people describe it. One of the “Yuga” acts as an adjective of the other “Yuga”.One of them refers to Dvapara yuga while the other one refers to Kali’.

Text 410-411
Yuge yuge chariyuga kari kene bolo
Purna Krishna avatara , angsha kene bolo
Se chari yugera katha, ara thai kahe
Tahao kahiba ami mon deho tahe

Translation –
(Brahma continued) Why do say that the phrase ‘Yuge Yuge’ refers to the cycle of four yugas ? Why do you refer Krishna, who is the complete Supreme personality of Godhead, to be only a plenary portion of the Supreme ? These four yugas have been referred elsewhere in the scriptures as well. Please listen attentively i speak those references.

Text 412
yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata
abhyutthhanam adharmasya tadatmanam srjamy aham
(Bhagavad Gita – 4.7)

Translation –
Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practices, O descendant of Bharata, and a sharp rise of irreligion , at that time I descend Myself.
(Bhagavad Gita – 4.7)

Text 413-414
Je je kale je je yuge dharmera haya hani
Adharmera abhutthana , se se kale jani
Tadakale apanake kariye srijana
Pratiyuge avatara angshera karon

Translation –
(Brahma explains the meaning of the above verse) ‘In whichever time, in whichever age, religious practices are harmed, and a predominant rise of irreligion occurs, at that time, manifesting my plenary portion, I descend to the earth in that age’.

Purport –
In order to destroy irreligion and establish religious practices, usually a plenary portion of the Supreme Lord descends to this world. There is no need for the supreme Lord with all of His potencies to descend just to accomplish this small task. The Supreme Lord (in His all fullness) descends as Lord Krishna in Vrindavana and Sri Chaitanya in Navadvipa, to manifest their confidential pastimes and provide pleasure to their devotees. These two lords advent only once in a day of brahma , which is equivalent to 8,600,000,000 earthly years. Sri Krishna manifests His sweet pastimes in Vrindavana while Lord Gauranga manifests His magnanimous pastimes in Navadvipa. Both the pastimes of Vrindavana and Navadvipa are the highest manifestations of spiritual ecstasies.

Text 415-416
Eteka kahiye ami shuno mor bol
Kahoye Locana, katha na theliyo mor
Kaliyuge Gaura Krishna janiyachi ami
Vishesh sandheho mor ghuchaile tumi

Translation –
Now i, Locana das, shall tell you something. Please listen to my words attentively and do not disregard them. (Brahma continued speaking to Narada) ‘I have learnt that in this age of Kali, Lord Krishna has descended as Lord Gauranga. My specific doubts on this are now crushed by you’.

Text 417-418
Ara aparupa shuno Kaliyuga dharma
Asrame nistare lok sankirtana dharma
Daan, vrata, tapa, homa, svadhyay sanjama
Basana bishoy yata e vidhi niyama

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Please hear the wonderful yuga-dharma for the age of kali. Congregational chanting of God’s holy names is the only means of deliverance for people of this age.Charity, vows, austerity, sacrifice, studying scriptures, sense control, following various rules and regulations in order to renounce material desires – all are attained automatically by performing sankirtana’

Text 419-420
Fol-bhoga-sruti shuni sab mayabandha
Nama guna mahima na jane chhar andha
Karmasutre bandi jiva bhromite bhromite
Nivritti nahik karma nahi sankalpite

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Being enamored by the Karma kanda of the Vedic scriptures that deals primarily with attaining fruitive results, the entire world is blinded. Such a blind person is completely ignorant of the glories of chanting the Supreme Lord’s holy names. Being bound by the ropes of Maya (illusion), a conditioned living entity wanders from place to place, never engaging in renunciation’.

Purport –

Sri Chaitanya Chandramrita reveals :

Acharya dharmam paricharya visnum
Vicharya tirthani vicharya vedan
Vina na Gaura priyapada sevam
Vedadi dusprapa padam vidanti
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 22)

Those who follow the rules of varnasrama dharma and occupational duties, or worship lord Vishnu for many many lives, visit places of pilgrimages, or scrutinizingly study the vedas but do not serve the lotus feet of the dear devotees of Lord Gauranga who are constantly absorbed in chanting, preaching and meditating upon His Holy glories and Pastimes – they shall never be able to understand or attain the transcendental abodes of Navadvipa or Vrindavana which is beyond the reach of the four vedas.

Staying very humble and submissive, and equipped with the remembrance of Gauranga’s blissful form and amazing pastimes, we should follow His instructions of daily chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra –
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

The word ‘Hare’ refers to the Supreme Lord’s internal energy or Srimati Radharani and the word ‘Krishna’ refers to Lord Krishna, the supreme personality of Godhead. As Lord Gauranga is non different from Sri Radha and Krishna (Sri Krishna Chaitanya ,Radha Krishna Nahe anya), the syllables ‘Hare Krishna’ is non different to Lord Gauranga. Thus Lord Gauranga is also worshipped when we chant the above Hare Krishna Mahamantra.
While chanting on the above Hare Krishna Maha mantra we should try to meditate upon Lord Gauranga’s sankirtana pastimes. Chanting the Maha Mantra gives us an opportunity to pray so that Lord Gauranga accepts us as one of His own and engages us in His sankirtana movement. By Chanting the Maha mantra, we constantly beg for Mahaprabhu’s causeless mercy.

Sri Jagadananda Pandita reveals in his Sri Prema vivarta –

Gaura ye sikhalo nama sei nama gao
anya sab nama mahatmya sei nama pao

Please chant the holy name that has been taught by lord Gauranga. By doing so you shall obtain the benefits of chanting all the other holy names.

In order to reap the maximum benefits from chanting the above Hare Krishna mahamantra, we should ‘Read, Contemplate and Preach’ atleast one of Lord Gauranga’s pastimes daily. We should read atleast one of Lord Gaurahari’s pastimes in a day, contemplate upon it and preach it to any person we desire. The next day we can Read, contemplate and preach a different pastime of Lord Gaurasundara. In this way we would purify our consciousness and progress very quickly in devotion.

In the navadvipa dham mahatmya, Pushkara tirtha reveals:

Koti koti varna dhari Sri krishna bhajana
Tathapi namete rati na paye durjana
Gauranga bhajile dusta bhava duure jaya
Alpa dine vraja dhame Radha krishna paya

– even after chanting the holy names of Radha and Krishna for millions of years, a rogue is not able to develop any taste for Harinama. But if he lovingly worships Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, his wicked mentality quickly vanishes and he soon achieves the lotus feet of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavana.

Text 421-422
Proloyer kale sab karmabandha ghuche
Heno bandhaghuche, Krishna katha yabe puchhe
Heno guna sankirtana kaliyuga dharma
Ghor papamoy bole na janiya marma

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘At the time of cosmic annihilation the bindings of Karma are destroyed. Only when one is no more bounded by the tight ropes of karma, can one enquire about Sri Krishna. The congregational chanting of the Lord’s glories is the yuga dharma of Kali yuga.As the atmosphere is surcharged with grave sins, people of Kali don’t realize this essential truth’.

Purport –
Please refer to the purport of verses 2.426-427

Text 423-424
Yugadharma sankirtana ghuchabe kemone
Keba dharma samsthapana kare prabhu bine
Puraba pratigya Gita-y prabhura bachane
Prabhu avatara haya sei ye karone

Translation –
‘How can Sankirtana ,the yugadharma of kali, be destroyed? Who else but He, the supreme master, can establish this yuga dharma? There is a promise that the Lord had made in the past ,which has been captured in the Bhagavad Gita. The Lord had descended for this very purpose’.

Text 425
paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca dushkritam
dharma samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge
(Bhagavad Gita – 4.8)

Translation –
To deliver the pious , annihilate the miscreants, as well as to re-establish the principles of religion, I appear Myself ,millennium after millennium.
(Bhagavad Gita – 4.8)

Text 426-427
Sadhujana paritran adharma vinash
Dharma samsthapana prati yugete prakash
Kali yuge sankirtana dharma iha maan
Kali Gaura avatara kabhu nahe aan

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘To deliver the pious, to destroy irreligion and to re-establish religious principles, the Lord descends millennium after millennium. The only religious practice in this age of Kali is sankirtana (congregational chanting of the Lord’s holy names and pastimes) and Lord Gauranga is the only incarnation of the Supreme Lord in this age of Kali’.

Purport –
The Bhagavata purana reveals :

krishna-varnam tvishakrishnam sangopangastra-parshadam,yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah
(Srimad Bhagavatam 11.5.32)

In the age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead (Gauranga) who constantly sings the holy name of Krishna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krishna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, weapons , servants, and confidential companions.

In order to derive the maximum benefits from chanting the above Hare Krishna Mahamantra , we must incessantly pray for Lord Gauranga’s causeless mercy.

In the navadvipa dham mahatmya, Pushkara tirtha reveals:

Koti koti varna dhari Sri krishna bhajana
Tathapi namete rati na paye durjana
Gauranga bhajile dusta bhava duure jaya
Alpa dine vraja dhame Radha krishna paya

– even after chanting the holy names of Radha and Krishna for millions of years, a rogue is not able to develop any taste for Harinama. But if he lovingly worships Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, his wicked mentality quickly vanishes and he soon achieves the lotus feet of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavana.

So how can we try to become a recipient of Lord Gauranga’s causeless mercy ?

Sri Chaitanya Chandramrita reveals :

dristah sprstah kirtitah samsmrito va
durasthair apy anato vadrito va
premnah saram datum iso ya ekah
Sri Chaitanya naumi devam dayalum
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 4)

– Whether seen, touched, glorified, intensely remembered, bowed down from afar or worshiped, Lord Gauranga causelessly awards to anyone and everyone the essence of pure unalloyed love for Himself. Thus I offer my respectful obeisances unto this most merciful Supreme Personality of Godhead.

At the same time, we can also try to serve and please Lord Nityananda as anyone who is loved by Lord Nitai becomes exceedingly dear to Lord Gaurahari. Nityananda prabhu urges everyone :

Chaitanya seva, chaitanya gao,
lao chaitanya nama
Chaitanye ye bhakti kare, sei mora prana
(Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya 1.29)

Nityananda Prabhu requested everyone to serve Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, chant His glories and utter His name. Nityananda Prabhu claimed that one who loves and worships Lord Chaitanya becomes His very life and soul.

Examining the other scriptures like Urdhvamnaya tantra or Navadvipa dham mahatmya we understand :

The Urdhvamnaya Tantra states :

dhanye kalau sampravishte, Gaura leela manorama;
prakata bhavita hy etat, vyaktam tada bhavishyati
(Urdhvamnaya Tantra)

The advent of the age of Kali is most auspicious because in the near future the most wonderful and enchanting holy Pastimes of Lord Gauranga will be most openly and widely established and broadcasted.

The Navadvipa dham mahatmya states –

‘ara eka gudha katha suna sarva jana, kali jive yogya vastu Gaura leela dhana’

Please hear the most confidential secret. The most suitable thing for the conditioned souls in this age of Kali, is the supreme treasure of Lord Gauranga’s pastimes.

Lord Gauranga’s name and His pastimes are non different from Him. So when we meditate upon Him, His name or His pastimes, we are in fact directly associating with Him. The more we do this regularly, the more we cleanse our consciousness which further helps in reviving our spontaneous faith and devotion unto Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. One who meditates and contemplates upon Mahaprabhu’s ecstatic form and His enchanting blissful pastimes ,is very quickly cleansed of all contaminations. With a purified consciousness, they can then quite easily chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, offenselessly and attentively. Also, it shall help us rekindle our lost attraction towards the golden avatara. We should understand that all living entities, already possess a very deep and strong attraction towards Lord Gaurahari. Hearing and contemplating upon His pastimes shall help us revive our lost relationship with Him (Sravanadi-suddha-chitte karaye udaya). When Mahaprabhu was travelling to Vrindavana through the forest of Jharkhand, even the animals of the jungle, recognised their eternal Lord and danced in ecstasy to His tunes, thereby participating in His Harinama sankirtana movement.
Sri Jagadananda Pandita sings :

Gaura nama Gaura dhama Gauranga charita
ye bhaje tate mor akaitava prita
(Sri Prema vivarta)

Whoever worships the holy name of Lord Gauranga, His pastime places, His splendid features and characteristics, I sincerely and unreservedly love them.

So we should ‘Read, Contemplate and Preach’ atleast one of Lord Gauranga’s pastimes daily.

Lord Chaitanya’s mercy is very unique. One who receives His mercy, can experience the highest ecstasy of love of God. The realization of this pure ecstatic love of the Supreme is extremely rare. This is something which the people of the previous yugas (Satya, Treta, Dvapara) could not receive even by means of performing severe austerities for thousands of years, performing grand sacrifices or even elaborate deity worship. This is rare even for the great demigods like Brahma, Shiva and Indra, who forever hanker to receive it.
The supreme Lord in His form as Sri Krishna rarely ever bestows this kind of special mercy. He gives it to His intimate associates or the gopis of Vrindavana. But Sri Chaitanya bestows this rare treasure of love of God, to one and all, freely, without any consideration. Hence Sri Chaitanya is the essence of all the incarnations of the supreme – ‘Avatara sar Gaura avatara’.

So to summarize, we should chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra daily (preferably atleast 16 rounds) by which we pray to Lord Chaitanya to engage us in His sankirtana. And at the same time we should ‘Read, Contemplate and Preach’ atleast one of Lord Gauranga’s pastimes everyday.

Text 428-429
Iha bali kolakoli kare muni sane
Anande bihavala brahma apana na jane
Eke kahe ara uthe Gaura gunera prabhay
Shakala indriya sukh karibare chay

Translation –
After saying this, Lord Brahma, being overwhelmed with ecstasy and completely forgetting himself, warmly embraced Narada muni. While speaking like this, Lord brahma’s transcendental ecstasy began rising even more and he desired to satisfy his senses by drenching them in the splendour of Lord Gauranga’s glories.

Purport –
Sri Chaitanya Chandramrita reveals :

Aparasya premojjvala-rasa-rahasyamrita nidhher
Nidhanam brahmesarchita iha hi Chaitanya charanah
Atas tam dhyayantu pranaya bharato yantu sharanam
Tam eva pronmattas tam iha kila gayantu kritinah
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, text 89)

Within the lotus feet of Lord Chaitanya, which is worshipped by Brahma and Shiva, rests the shoreless nectarean ocean of confidential loving mellows for the Lord. The saintly devotees should always meditate upon these feet, take its exclusive shelter, become intensely attached and intoxicated with love for them and chant their glories.

Text 430
Ara katha shuno prabhura sahasreka nama
Ek-kale dui nama haila ekthhame

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Please listen to one more thing. There are millions of names of the Supreme Lord. Two of His names are mentioned here (in Vishnu sahasranama stotra) in the same place’.

Text 431
Suvarna-varno hemango barangaschandanangadi
Sannyasa-krichhamah shanto nishtha-shanti-parayana

Translation –
“When Krishna, the supreme personality of Godhead appears as Sri Gauranga, He possesses a golden (suvarna) complexion. His limbs have a color of molten white gold (hemanga). His body is exceedingly beautiful (varangas) and He is decorated with sandalwood pulp (candanangadi). These four are the symptoms of the Lord’s grihasta pastimes”.

Text 432-433
Hemgaur kalebara subarana dyuti
Sannyasa karana se parama mahamati
Bhavishyapurane shuno Krishnera pratigya
Kali janmiba teenbar ei ajna

Translation –
(Lord Brahma explains the above verse) ‘His body possesses a golden complexion and is exceedingly effulgent. He accepts sannyasa and is very noble hearted. Please listen to Lord Krishna’s vow in Bhavishya purana in which He states three times, that He would appear in the age of kali’.

Purport –
Srila Prabodhananda Sarasvati prays in Chaitanya Chandramrita :

Kripa-sindhuh sandhyaruna-ruchi- vicitrambara-dharoj-
Jvalah purna-premamrita-maya-maha-jyotir amalah
Saci-garbha-ksirabmbudhhi-bhava udaradbhuta-kalah
Kalanathah sriman udayatu tava svanta nabhasi
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 15)

Creating great tidal waves in the great ocean of causeless mercy, being splendidly dressed in wonderful and astonishing saffron garments that are as glorious as the sunrise, and glowing with the nectar of pure ecstatic love, may the handsome and wonderful moon of Lord Chaitanya, who has arisen from the supremely pure milk ocean of mother Saci’s womb, enter the sky of your heart.

Text 434
Ajayadhvam ajayadhvam ajayadhvang na samsay
Kalou sankirtana-rambhe bhavisyami saci sutah

Translation –
‘I shall take birth, I shall take birth, I shall take birth. Of this there is no doubt. In kali yuga, I will appear as the son of Saci and inaugurate the sankirtana movement’.

Purport –
Here in the below verse Lord Narayana, the opulent form of the Supreme Lord, reveals that Gauranga Mahaprabhu is the essence of all the incarnations of the supreme :

E mor antara hiya, tomare kahila iha
Sambari rakhoho nija mone
Saba avatara sar , Kali Gora avatara
Nistariba lok nijagune
(Chaitanya Mangala, text 272)

(Lord Narayana continued) ‘Now I have revealed my heart to you. Please keep this secret carefully locked away in your heart. Lord Gauranga, who shall appear in this age of kali, is the essence of all the other incarnations of the supreme. By the strength of His transcendental qualities, He shall deliver all people in Kali Yuga’.

Srila Narottama das Thakura sings :

‘Gaurangera duti pada, yar dhana sampada, se jane bhakti rasa sar’ – One who treasures the lotus feet of Lord Gauranga in his heart, knows the very essence of devotional science.

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is the most magnanimous incarnation of the Supreme Lord. He freely distributes His mercy without judging any qualifications of the person whom He is showering His blessings upon.

‘Gaurangera madhura leela, yar karne praveshila, hridoya nirmala velo taar’ – Anyone who as much as hears of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s nectarian pastimes, is immediately cleansed of all impurities in his heart.

So we must daily hear and contemplate upon Lord Gauranga’s amazing enchanting nectarean pastimes. This shall clean our heart and purify our consciousness.

Later in Chaitanya Mangala, it has been revealed :

Ati aparupa leela prakashila prabhu
Chari yuge adbhut katha nahi shune kabhu
(Chaitanya Mangala , 1.94)

– Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had manifested the most wonderful incomparable pastimes, never heard before in any of the four yugas.

Text 435-436
Ara aparupa katha shuno savdhane
Kaliyuga dharma marma vicharoho mane
Papamaya kaliyuge bole sarvajane
Adharma prakata dharma kshina acharane

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Please hear attentively to some more wonderful topics. Please think about the essence of yuga dharma in the age of Kali. Everyone says that the age of kali is full of sins. Irreligion is rampant and religious practices are very weak’.

Text 437-438
Harinama sankirtana ei dharma taar
Ei punah harinama sarva-dharma-sar
Daan brata tapa homa jnana japa fol
Anayase mukti dei ek nama bol

Translation –
(Brahma continues) ‘The only prescribed religious practice of this age is Harinama Sankirtana. Harinama sankirtana (Congregational chanting of the holy names of Lord Hari) is the essence of all religious practices.By chanting the Lord’s holy name only once, one easily attains the results of charity, vows, austerity, Vedic sacrifice, knowledge, chanting of fruitive mantras. Harinama sankirtana easily bestows the fruit of liberation unto one’.

Purport –
Harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty-eva nasty-eva nasty-eva gatir anyathaa
(Brhad Naradiya Purana)

In this age of Kali the only means of deliverance is chanting of the holy name of Lord Hari. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.

The holy names of Lord Hari must be chanted offenselessly in order to derive the maximum spiritual benefit. There are ten offenses that we should avoid while chanting the holy name. This offenseless chanting and attachment to the holy names of Lord Hari can only be achieved by the causeless mercy of Lord Gauranga.

In the navadvipa dham mahatmya, Pushkara tirtha reveals:

Koti koti varna dhari Sri krishna bhajana
Tathapi namete rati na paye durjana
Gauranga bhajile dusta bhava duure jaya
Alpa dine vraja dhame Radha krishna paya

– even after chanting the holy names of Radha and Krishna for millions of years, a rogue is not able to develop any taste for Harinama. But if he lovingly worships Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, his wicked mentality quickly vanishes and he soon achieves the lotus feet of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavana.

Sri Chaitanya Chandramrita reveals :

Pasanaah parisochito mrita rasair naivankurah sambhavet
Langulam saramapater vivrinatah syad asya naivarjavam
Hastava unnayata budhah aho dharyaam vidhor mandalam
Sarvam sadhanam astu Gaura karunabhave na bhavotsavah
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 33)

Even if watered and nourished with nectar for millions of years, a stone will not sprout a single blade of grass. Even if a dog’s tail is stretched and extended , it will never become straight. A man may stretch out his arms as much as he likes, but he will never be able to catch the moon.Similarly a person may follow the various kinds of spiritual practices for millions of lives but he will not be able to attain the pure unadulterated love of God without achieving the mercy of Lord Gauranga.

So how can we try to become a recipient of Lord Gauranga’s causeless mercy ?

Sri Chaitanya Chandramrita reveals :

dristah sprstah kirtitah samsmrito va
durasthair apy anato vadrito va
premnah saram datum iso ya ekah
Sri Chaitanya naumi devam dayalum
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 4)

– Whether seen, touched, glorified, intensely remembered, bowed down from afar or worshiped, Lord Gauranga causelessly awards to anyone and everyone the essence of pure unalloyed love for Himself. Thus I offer my respectful obeisances unto this most merciful Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Sri Jagadananda Pandita (incarnation of Satyabhama devi) sings :

Gaura nama Gaura dhama Gauranga charita
ye bhaje tate mor akaitava prita
(Sri Prema vivarta)

Whoever worships the holy name of Lord Gauranga, His pastime places, His splendid features and characteristics, I sincerely and unreservedly love them.

Hence in addition to chanting the holy name we should make an attempt to read, contemplate and preach lord Gauranga’s pastimes every single day. This would increase our attachment towards Lord Gaurahari, cleanse our consciousness and help us become more devoted unto Him. Worshipping Lord Gauranga and chanting of His glories and pastimes is exceedingly pleasing to Lord Gauranga and all of His associates (‘amare kiniya laha bhaja Gaurahari’). This is how by pleasing the Lord and our previous acharyas, we can progress in our devotional life very quickly.

Nityananda prabhu urges everyone :

Chaitanya seva, chaitanya gao,
lao chaitanya nama
Chaitanye ye bhakti kare, sei mora prana
(Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya 1.29)

Nityananda Prabhu requested everyone to serve Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, chant His glories and utter His name. Nityananda Prabhu claimed that one who loves and worships Lord Chaitanya becomes His very life and soul.

Text 439-440
Visayi visayabhoge nama kare chinta
Aage bhog dei pachhe hari bhakti daata
Sradhabanta jana yadi hariguna gaay
Saba sukh chhari prabhu tara pachhe dhay

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘A materialist initially chants the holy name of Hari, desiring to enjoy the material pleasures. The holy name will first bestow unto him the material pleasures he craves for, but then it shall bestow unto him, unalloyed devotion unto the Supreme Lord Hari. If a sincere person sings the glories of Lord Hari, the supreme Lord, leaving aside all His blissful activities, runs after that person’.

Purport –

Chanting of ‘Hariguna’ (glories of Lord Gauranga) is the supreme treasure of Kali yuga.

Srila Vasudeva Ghosh sings :

Gora-guna ga-o suni
bahu punya phale so pahum milala
prema parasamani

– Please chant the glories of lord Gauranga and let me hear it with all my ears. It is after accumulating a great amount of piety that one gets to meet Lord Gaura, who is a touchstone of ecstatic spiritual love.

akhila jibera e soka sayara
nayana nimese sese
o-i prema lesa parasa na pa-ile
parana judabe kise

In the blink of an eye ,He dries up the sufferings of all fallen souls. How can a suffering soul, who has not yet received even a small fraction of the soothing love that Lord Gauranga bestows, bring fulfillment and happiness in his life ?

Regarding chanting of Harinama (holy name of the Lord), staying very humble and submissive, and equipped with the remembrance of Gauranga’s blissful form and amazing pastimes, we should follow Gauranga’s instructions of daily chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra –

We should try to chant atleast 16 rounds of Hare Krishna mahamantra everyday.

Sri Jagadananda Pandita mentions in his Sri Prema vivarta –

Gaura ye sikhalo nama sei nama gao
anya sab nama mahatmya sei nama pao

Please chant the holy name that has been taught (Hare Krishna Mahamantra) by lord Gauranga. By doing so you shall obtain the benefits of chanting all the other holy names.

Text 441-442
E heno krishnera nama , guna sankirtana
Papamaya kaliyuge kaila dharma heno
Yugera svabhava iha yugadharma kahi
Papamaya kaliyuge paradharma ehi

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘The chanting of Lord Krishna’s names and glories of the Supreme Lord establishes religion in this sinful age of kali. This is the natural religious practice of kali yuga and its yuga-dharma. This is the highest form of religious practice in this sinful age of kali’.

Text 443-444
Yadi ba baliba paap duschhedya karane
Prakashila mahakharga nama sankirtane
Satya-adi praja kene kalijanma mage
Harinama parayana haiba Kaliyuge

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘If someone says that the armour of sinful activities is very difficult to penetrate, then one can bring out the big axe of sankirtana of Lord’s holy names to get rid of it. Why do the people living in Satya Yuga, and the other previous yugas desire to take birth in Kali ? It is because they want to become devoted to chanting of the Lord’s holy name’.

Purport –
In the navadvipa dham mahatmya, Pushkara tirtha reveals:

Koti koti varna dhari Sri krishna bhajana
Tathapi namete rati na paye durjana
Gauranga bhajile dusta bhava duure jaya
Alpa dine vraja dhame Radha krishna paya

– even after chanting the holy names of Radha and Krishna for millions of years, a rogue is not able to develop any taste for Harinama. But if he lovingly worships Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, his wicked mentality quickly vanishes and he soon achieves the lotus feet of Radha and Krishna in Vrindavana.

Sri Chaitanya Chandramrita hence states :

alaukikya premonmada rasa vilasa prathanaya
na yah sri Govindanuchara saciveshv esu kritisu
mahascharyam premotsavam api hadhad datari na yan
matir Gaure saksat para iha sa mudho nara pasuh
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 40)

– The supreme lord Gauranga is the greatest philanthropist who wonderfully performs His transcendental pastimes thereby freely distributing to one and all the pure love of God, which is rarely attained even by the principal associates of Lord Govinda. Thus a person whose mind is not rapt in meditation of Lord Gauranga is certainly a bewildered fool, and an animal in the guise of a man.

Text 445
kritadisu praja rajan kalavicchati sambhavam
kalau khalu bhavisyanti narayana-parayanah
(Srimad Bhagavatam 11.5.38)

Translation –
‘My dear King, the inhabitants of Satya-yuga and other ages eagerly desire to take birth in this Age of Kali, because in this age there will be many devotees of Narayana, the Supreme Lord’.
(Srimad Bhagavatam 11.5.38)

Purport –
Kali yuga is best of all yugas because it has been blessed with the most ecstatic superexcellent pastimes and instructions of Sri Chaitanya, the most munificent form of the supreme Lord :

Yata yata avatara saba haite sar
Kabhu nahi dekhi heno premar bhandar
Safal janam din, safal nayan
Ki dekhilun Gaura rupa , prasanna bayan
(Chaitanya Mangala , 2.121-122)

(Narada muni says) ‘Of all the Lord’s incarnations , Lord Gauranga is the best. I have never ever seen such a reservoir of pure ecstatic love. My life has become successful, my eyes have borne fruit, as today I have been able to behold the beautiful form of Lord Gauranga with His pleasant, blissful, smiling face’.

Also, the Urdhvamnaya Tantra states :

dhanye kalau sampravishte, Gaura leela manorama;
prakata bhavita hy etat, vyaktam tada bhavishyati
(Urdhvamnaya Tantra)
The advent of the age of Kali is most auspicious because in the near future the most wonderful and enchanting holy Pastimes of Lord Gauranga will be most openly and widely established and broadcasted.

Text 446-447
Krishna avatare kene laiya sarvashakti
Papashaya jane nahi dei premabhakti
Aicchana karuna kaha kon yuge ara
Na bhajite prema dei kon avatara

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘Why did Krishna, who had descended with all His complete power and potencies, did not bestow the pure love of God unto the sinful ? Please tell me in which other yuga, does the Lord appear in such a compassionate mood, that He freely bestows the ecstatic love of God, even to those who do not engage in devotional service ?’

Purport –

Sri Chaitanya Chandramrita reveals why the form of Lord Gauranga is so special and is the very essence of all incarnations :

Rakso-daitya-kulam hatam kiyad idam yogadi-vartma-kriya-
Margo va prakati-kritah kiyad idam sristy adhikam va kiyat
Mediny-uddharanadikam kiyad idam premojjvalaya maha-
Bhakter vartma-karim param bhagavatas Chaitanya-murtim stumah
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 7)

What benefit did the world derive when the incarnations of the supreme Lord like Ramachandra, Nrsimha, and many others killed so many raksasa and Daityas ? What was the benefit derived when Lord kapila and other incarnations reveal the paths of sankhya and yoga ? Is it of great glory that Lord Brahma and other guna-avataras create, maintain and destroy the material universes ? How auspicious is it that Lord Varahadeva lifted and rescued the earth from the garbhodaka ocean ? We do not consider these pastimes to be so important. The most important of all things is that Lord Chaitanya has revealed the great splendour of pure ecstatic love for Himself. Let us glorify that Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Text 448-449
Papanash hetu achhe dharma, karma, tirtha
Ki janoho dharmashil pay heno artha
Eteka janila kali sarva-yuga-sar
Sankirtana-dharma bahi dharma nahi ara

Translation –
(Brahma continued) ‘A person engages in religious practices, pious deeds and pilgrimage, in order to destroy his sinful reactions. But these do not award him with the great wealth of ecstatic love of God. From all this, we come to understand that Kali Yuga is the best of all the other yugas and there is absolutely no other spiritual practice except the congregational chanting of Lord Krishna or Gauranga’s holy names and pastimes’.

Purport –
This is the prayer of those who have realized that Gauranga prema(love) is the essence of bhakti (devotional science) –

Vaso me varam astu hora dahana jvalavali panjare
Sri Chaitanya padaravinda vimukhair na kutrachit sangamah
Vaikunthadi padam svayam ca militam no me mano lipsate
Padambhoja rajas chata yadi manak gaurasya no rasyate
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 65)

Let me live in the most terrible and the most dreadful burning cage of fire rather than associate with those who are averse to Lord Chaitanya’s lotus feet.My heart has no desire to achieve an eternal residence in Vaikuntha if for a single moment I cannot relish the pollen of the lotus feet of Lord Chaitanya.

Text 450-451
Eteka vichara katha kahila birinchi
Shuniya Narada vina bajay susonchi
Eheno amrita Brahma-Narada sambhasa
Shuniya ananda hiya e Locana das

Translation –
In this way, brahma spoke all his considerations.Narada became delighted hearing them and sounded sweet music from his vina.Hearing this nectarian conversation between Brahma and Narada, Locana dasa finds his heart filled with bliss.

(Sindhura raag)

Text 452-453
Narada kahen Brahma ki kahiba ara
Je kichhu kahila ei hridoy amar
Karmabandhe bhromite bhromite kata kalpa
Daibe yadi Vaishnava seva ghote atikalpa

Translation –
Narada said, ‘Brahma, what more can I say ? You have already said whatever I had kept in my heart.Being bound by the ropes of fruitive activities, a conditioned being wanders for aeons (in this material world). If by the grace of the Lord, he ever renders even a little service to a Vaishnava (continued..)’

Text 454-455
Tara mahattama katha nigura shuniya
Paloye parama jatne savdhana haiya
Tabe muktabandha haiya krishnapara hay
Salokyadi mukti chari anguli na chhoy

Translation –
(Narada continues) ‘or hears about the confidential truths of spiritual life from him, and carefully strives to follow the spiritual process, then he attains liberation from material bondage and becomes devoted to serving Lord Krishna. Such a person, does not even care to grab the five kinds of liberation beginning with Salokya’.

Purport –
Sri Chaitanya Chandramrita reveals the glories of the devotees of Lord Gauranga :

Kaivalyam narakayate tri dasa pur akasha puspayate
Durdantendriya kala sarpa patali protkhata damstrayate
Visvam purna sukhayate vidhi mahendradis ca kitayate
Yat karunya kataksa vaibhav-avatam tam Gauram eva stumah
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, text 5)

For those who have attained the merciful sidelong glance of Lord Gauranga, impersonal liberation (merging into the brahmajyoti) becomes as painful as going to hell, the heavenly cities of the demigods seem to be as trivial as mere flowers floating in the sky, the venomous and poisonous fangs of the untamable black snakes of the senses become extracted and uprooted, the whole world which is otherwise full of misery becomes full of supreme joy and the exalted positions of Brahma, Indra and all the demigods become as insignificant as those of tiny insects. Let us glorify that supremely merciful Lord Gauranga.

Even the residents of Vaikuntha hanker to taste the ecstatic bliss arising out of Lord Chaitanya’s lotus feet. Such is the stature of Gauranga Prema.

Aho vaikuntha sthair api ca bhagavata parshada varaih
Saromancahm drista yad anuchara Vakresvara mukhah
Mahascharya premojjvala rasa sadavesha vivasi
Kritangas tam Gauram katham akritah punyah pranayatu
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 44)

When the exalted devotees of Vaikuntha behold the wonderful faces of the most intimate devotees of Lord Gauranga headed by Vakresvara Pandita, which are overwhelmed and agitated by continually tasting the splendid nectar of pure love for Lord Gauranga, the Lord’s associates in vaikuntha are filled with great wonder and the hairs on their body stand on their end. Without performing many pious deeds how can one become a devotee of Lord Gauranga ?

Text 456-457
Tar por premabhakti gopikara bhav
Ke achhoye adhikari se saba alap
Jar rasera bosh prabhu Trijagata nath
Prakrita-janera jeno kultar sath

Translation –
(Narada continued) ‘Talking about the ecstatic loving sentiments of the Gopis of Vrindavana – who is eligible to receive such an exalted mood ? The Supreme Lord of the three worlds (Krishna) is conquered by these loving mellows in the same way that a paramour conquers her lover’.

Purport –
Apart from propagating the holy names of the Sri Krishna and the science of unconditional devotional service, there was another confidential reason why Lord Chaitanya had descended in this world. The Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna possessed an intense desire to relish the supreme transcendental bliss that Srimati Radharani experienced by serving Him. Krishna is the Supreme Enjoyer, however, Srimati Radhika, the Supreme enjoyed, experiences a higher degree of ecstasy by serving Sri Krishna. This is something that bewildered even the Supreme Lord and He wanted to experience this first hand, in order to properly appreciate Radharani’s position. He also wanted to understand the transcendental mellow of Himself and how He was a reservoir of all sweetness that drove His devotees crazy.Hence taking up the mood (bhava) and the golden bodily complexion (kanti) of Srimati Radharani, Sri Krishna descended as Lord Chaitanya in this holy land of Navadvipa.Navadvipa was perceived and created by Srimati Radharani Herself to provide pleasure to Her worshipable master. Sri Chaitanya’s heart was an image of Srimati Radhika’s emotions – greatly turbulent with the feelings of union (sambhoga) and separation (vipralambha) with Krishna. Hence, it is stated that there is no difference between Lord Chaitanya and the combination of Sri Krishna and Srimati Radharani (Sri Krishna Chaitanya ,Radha Krishna Nahe anya). Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura exclaims that Sri Chaitanya is not simply Krishna or simply Radhika. Instead, He is the intense embrace of Sri Radha and Krishna. Such is the intensity of their embrace that that the divine couple becomes inseparable and merges into one form. Sri Krishna is then ornamented with the deep mood of Radharani and gets completely covered by Her bodily effulgence.Such is the Supreme position of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Translation –
(Narada continued) ‘Who can possibly describe the premabhakti of the gopis ? Uddhava desired to be born as a creeper in Vrindavana, in order to get the dust from the feet of the gopis’.

Text 459
asam aho charana-renu-jusam aham syam

Translation –
‘The gopis of Vrindavana have given up their husbands, sons and other family members, who are exceedingly difficult to give up, and they have forsaken the path of chastity to take shelter of the lotus feet of Mukunda (Krishna) which one should search for through Vedic knowledge. O ! let me be fortunate enough to be born as a bush, creeper or a herb of Vrindavana, because the gopis trample them and bless them with the dust of their lotus feet’.
(Srimad Bhagavatam 10.47.61)

Purport –
This is the how Uddhava had prayed realizing the exalted stature of the gopis of Vrindavana.

(Narada continued) ‘The same Supreme Lord, the unending glories of whose feet are eternally sung by the vedas, but whose ends they never reach; who lies upon the Ananta sesha making him His bed – the same Lord became a servant of the gopis’.

Kotha gopi vanachari, byabhichari kama

Translation –
(Narada continued) ‘There are hundreds and hundreds of devotees who have followed in the footsteps of the gopis and in this way they brought the Lord under their control. There is no comparison between the stature of Lord Krishna, who is the supersoul in everyone’s heart and the gopis of vrindavana who wandered in the forests in search for Him. Similarly there is no comparison between the deep transcendental love that they shared and material lust’.

Text 466-467
Aichhana bhakati tattva bujhibare chai
Parama nigura bhakti iha boi nai
Heno bhakati prachariba kaliyuge prabhu
Lakhimi ananta yaha shune nahi kabhu

Translation –
(Narada continued) ‘I want to understand this supreme truth of devotional science. There is nothing more deeper and more devotional than this (loving relationship between Krishna and the gopis). The supreme Lord (Gauranga) shall preach this ecstatic love of God in the age of Kali. Such an intense love has been unheard of by even Lakshmi and Ananta sesh’.

Purport –
Sri Chaitanya Chandramrita describes the rarity of Lord Chaitanya’s teachings and the exalted position of His followers very beautifully :

Bhrantam yatra munisvarair api pura yasmin ksama mandale
Kasyapi [ravivesa naiva dhisana yad veda no va sukah
Yan na kvapi kripamayena ca nije py udghatitam saurina
Tasmin ujjvala bhakti vartmani sukham khelanti Gaura priyah
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 18)

The superexcellent path of pure and confidential devotional service which bewildered great sages of the past, which material intelligence has no power to enter, which even the great and exalted devotee Srila Sukadeva Goswami was not able to fully understand, and which was not directly revealed even by merciful Lord Krishna, is the place where the dear devotees of Lord Gauranga happily enjoy their pastimes.

Srila Prabodhananda sarasvati describes the eccentric nature and mood of Lord Gauranga , who was always engrossed in an ecstasy of Krishna Prema:
That is why Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is known as the essence of all the other incarnations of the supreme (Avatara sar Gaura avatara). He is the most magnanimous incarnation of the Supreme who has blessed us with the most wonderful blissful pastimes that has ever been manifested in this world.

Lord Gauranga reveals the reason for His advent in the below verse :

Nija preme bhasaiba e brahmanda sob
Kabhu na rakhibo dukhha, shoka ek lob
Bhasaiba sthabara , jangama devagane
Shuni anandita kahe e das Locana-e
(Chaitanya Mangala, 568-569)

Translation –
(Lord Gauranga said) ‘I shall flood the universe with the nectar of ecstatic devotional service unto Myself. Not the slightest tinge of suffering shall remain. I shall flood the moving, the unmoving, the demigods in that ecstatic nectar’. Locana das narrates this pastime, being filled with bliss.

In this verse Lord Chaitanya has predicted how the whole universe (not just the earth) shall be intoxicated with His divine love and be flooded in devotional ecstasy. He has predicted how being madly engrossed in His ecstatic love, the world shall be completely delivered from their miserable suffering condition. A person who receives Mahaprabhu’s causeless mercy cares for nothing else in this material world and achieves the highest perfection of life. The words ‘Nija preme’ is very significant, as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has specifically mentioned over here ,about the transcendental love that others shall possess for Him and His own form (and not for any other manifestations of the supreme). Though all forms and manifestations of the Supreme belong to one and the same Supreme person, yet there are differences when it comes to each of their mood, nature, characteristics, qualities, magnanimity and purpose.
So worship of Lord Gauranga, the golden avatara, is very essence of devotional science, which shall soon be revealed in this fortunate age of kali.

Bhaktivinoda Thakura has also revealed the same in Samalochana, Sajjana Tosani-

ati alpa dinera madhei Mahaprabhu sarva desa vyapi haiya eka matra upasya-tattva haitechen.

In a very short time, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu will become the sole object of worship in all the villages, towns, and cities of the world.

dhanye kalau sampravishte, Gaura leela manorama;
prakata bhavita hy etat, vyaktam tada bhavishyati
(Urdhvamnaya Tantra)
The advent of the age of Kali is most auspicious because in the near future the most wonderful and enchanting holy Pastimes of Lord Gauranga will be most openly and widely established and broadcasted.

The Navadvipa dham mahatmya states –
‘ara eka gudha katha suna sarva jana, kali jive yogya vastu Gaura leela dhana’

Please hear the most confidential secret. The most suitable thing for the conditioned souls in this age of Kali, is the supreme treasure of Lord Gauranga’s pastimes.

Text 474
Ahaha bhakata sange, Hari-guna gaan range
Bay shankha mridanga karatala
E bhuvana chaturdash, prema barishana rasa
Guna kirtana kariba prachara na

Translation –
O how wonderful ! Being accompanied by His devotees, the Lord shall sing glories of Lord Hari along with the auspicious sounds of conches, mridanga and Karatalas. Lord Gauranga shall shower the nectar of ecstatic love of God and preach the Lord’s glories throughout the fourteen worlds.

Purport –
Love for Lord Gauranga can saturate one with such ecstatic symptoms, that it even surprises and amazes the denizens of Vaikuntha.

One who is the recipient of Lord Gauranga’s mercy, hankers for nothing else in this creation :

Patanti yadi siddhayah karatale svayam durlabhah
Swayam ca yadi sevaki bhavitum agatah syuh surah
Kim anyad idam eva va yadi chaturbhujam syad vapus
Tathapi mama no manak chalati Gaurachandran mama
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 64)

Even if the most rarely achieved mystic perfections were to fall into my hands, even if the most exalted demigods from the heavenly planets approached to become my servants, and even if i inadvertently achieved the four armed form of a resident of Vaikuntha, even then my mind would not swerve from Lord Gaurachandra for even a moment.

Text 475
Vrindavana guna rasa, pronoy se sarabash
Apane aswadi diba sabhe na
Dev-nag-naragane , achandal sabjane
Piyaiba jaha kari lobhe na

Translation –
The sweet nectarean mellows of Vrindavana, shall be first relished and then distributed freely to everyone by Gauranga. Demigods, Nagas, humans and even candalas (uncivilized people) shall be able to drink this most desired nectar.

Purport-
Devotees of Lord Gaurahari do not desire liberation, heavenly bliss or even entrance into Vaikuntha planets. All they hanker for is association of and service to Lord Chaitanya life after life. Though Lord Chaitanya and Lord Krishna are one and the same person ,yet the two are different when it comes to their mood, nature and their magnanimity.Along with His associates, Sri Chaitanya had manifested the most blissful , heart rending pastimes that have been ever witnessed in human history. In fact, some of the eternal associates of the Lord have experienced a greater degree of transcendental ecstasy being part of the pastimes of Lord Chaitanya, as compared to being part of Sri Krishna’s vrindavana pastimes. Lord Gaurahari freely gives what no other incarnation of the Supreme Lord has ever given before – the ecstatic pure love of God. Thus the devotees exclusively devoted to Lord Chaitanya’s lotus feet hanker to gain entrance into the spiritual abode of Navadvipa, where Sri Sacinandana Gaurahari eternally performs His blissful ecstatic pastimes. The realm of navadvipa is eternally pervaded with the transcendental mood of audarya (magnanimity).

Text 476

Anande bhulila e Locana das na

Translation –
The greatly blissful and auspicious treasure of Vrindavana shall now be manifest. The masters of the world shall take birth in the earth. I, Locana das, is now completely delirious with bliss.

Purport –
Creating great tidal waves in the great ocean of causeless mercy, being splendidly dressed in wonderful and astonishing saffron garments that are as glorious as the sunrise, and glowing with the nectar of pure ecstatic love, may the handsome and wonderful moon of Lord Chaitanya, who has arisen from the supremely pure milk ocean of mother Saci’s womb, enter the sky of your heart.
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, text 15)
