new sprouts.

Nidhanam brahmesarchita iha hi Chaitanya charanah
Atas tam dhyayantu pranaya bharato yantu sharanam

(Chaitanya Chandramrita, text 89)

Within the lotus feet of Lord Chaitanya, which is worshipped by Brahma and Shiva, rests the shoreless nectarean ocean of confidential loving mellows for the Lord. The saintly devotees should always meditate upon these feet, take its exclusive shelter, become intensely attached and intoxicated with love for them and chant their glories.

Lord Narayana reveals the supreme position of Lord Gaurahari :

Punah kahe gunamani, nibhrite kahiye ami
Seirupa sahaja svarupe
Tar maya chhaya yata, avatara shata shata
Aradhoye parama udyoge
(Chaitanya Mangala, 2.511)

Lord Narayana , the jewel of all virtues, then replied, ‘The form (Gauranga) that I had described to You secretly ,is my original form. Maya is the shadow of that form and hundreds and hundreds of incarnations have come from Him.He is worshipped with the noblest of endeavours’.

Hence Lord Gauranga is not an incarnation(avatara) of the supreme but He is the source (avatari) of all the other incarnations.

Purport –
As we have read before in this chapter, Lord Narayana made the following promise to devi Katyayani:

Abirodhe dibe sabakare
Mahaprasade gandhe , sabhe hobe muktabandhe
Ghuchaibe nirbandha bichare
(Chaitanya Mangala, Text 2.264)

(Lord Narayana continued) ‘I shall uphold this promise of Yours ,of freely distributing my food remnants (Mahaprasada) to everyone in this world. The mere fragrance of my remnants shall relieve everyone of their material bondages and their strong attachment to intellectual arguments’.

Accordingly, in Jagannatha Puri, the Mahaprasada of the Supreme Lord is distributed freely to one and all without any prohibitions. The pastimes of Lord Jagannatha fulfills Lord Narayana’s promise to devi Katyayani.

Text 494
Vaikuntha upari sthan, Goloka yahara nama
Sri Gaurasundara tahe raja
Lakhimi adika naari, eki Purusa Hari
Sukhomoy sakala paraja

Translation –
(Jagannatha continued) ‘Goloka, which occupies the topmost position in Vaikuntha, is the place where Lord Gauranga is the king.Lakshmi and many other ladies reside there and serve Him. Lord Hari is the only enjoyer over there. All the residents of Goloka are full of bliss’.

Purport –
Lord Jagannatha confirms once again herein ,the Supreme position of Lord Chaitanya.

The topmost spiritual planet of Goloka has two manifestations – Vrindavana and Navadvipa. Vrindavana is characterised by sweetness or madhurya wherein Lord Krishna eternally enjoys His sweet pastimes with the residents of Vrindavana. On the other hand, the realm of Navadvipa is characterised by Lord Chaitanya’s magnanimous (audarya) sankirtana pastimes.
Madhurya is fully present in audarya and audarya is also fully present in madhurya. However that portion of Goloka where madhurya (Sweetness) is more prominent , it is known as Vrindavana. While that portion of the spiritual world where audarya or magnanimity is more prominent, it is known as Navadvipa. Both Vrindavana and Navadvipa are the highest realms of the spiritual world.

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura mentions in Jaiva dharma that a spiritual practitioner who worships Lord Krishna during his sadhana (spiritual practice) achieves Vrindavana at the end of his life, whereas one who worships and meditates upon Lord Gauranga, achieves the spiritual realm of Navadvipa. Whereas one who meditates upon both of them during his sadhana, achieves both of these realms at the end of his life, simultaneously.
Devotees of Lord Gaurahari do not desire liberation, heavenly bliss or even entrance into Vaikuntha planets. All they hanker for is association of and service to Lord Chaitanya life after life.

‘Even if the most rarely achieved mystic perfections were to fall into my hands, even if the most exalted demigods from the heavenly planets approached to become my servants, and even if i inadvertently achieved the four armed form of a resident of Vaikuntha, even then my mind would not swerve from Lord Gaurachandra for even a moment’.
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 64)

Though Lord Chaitanya and Lord Krishna are one and the same person ,yet the two are different when it comes to their mood, nature and their magnanimity.Along with His associates, Sri Chaitanya had manifested the most blissful , heart rending pastimes that have been ever witnessed in human history. In fact, some of the eternal associates of the Lord have experienced a greater degree of transcendental ecstasy being part of the pastimes of Lord Chaitanya, as compared to being part of Sri Krishna’s vrindavana pastimes.

Ati aparupa leela prakashila prabhu
Chari yuge adbhut katha nahi shune kabhu
(Chaitanya Mangala , 1.94)

– Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had manifested the most wonderful incomparable pastimes, never heard before in any of the four yugas.

Lord Gaurahari freely gives what no other incarnation of the Supreme Lord has ever given before – the ecstatic pure love of God. Thus the devotees exclusively devoted to Lord Chaitanya’s lotus feet hanker to gain entrance into the spiritual abode of Navadvipa, where Sri Sacinandana Gaurahari eternally performs His blissful ecstatic pastimes.

Salokyadi chari mukti, vaikunthanathera shakti
Bhaktihina apane svatantra
Lakhimi sampada moy, deenabhava nahi roy
Bhakati kebala paratantra

Translation –
(Lord Jagannatha continued) ‘The four kinds of liberation starting with salokya are the potencies of the Lord Krishna, the master of vaikuntha. He is completely independent and never conquered by one without devotion. Being surrounded by goddess Lakshmi, He is full of opulences and without any scarcity. But He is only conquered through pure devotion’.

Text 502
Sharkara se apane , nija svad nahi jane
Poro-jana kare upobhog
Aichhana mukti pada, bhakati pathe dei baadh
Sab para premabhaktiyoga

Translation –
(Lord Jagannatha continued) ‘Sugar does not know the taste of its own sweetness. Only the others enjoy its taste. Liberation is an obstacle to the path of devotional service. Loving devotional service is the highest attainment’.

Purport –
There are five kinds of liberation that a spiritual practitioner can obtain at the end of his life in order to get released from the bondages of birth and death :

  1. Svarupya – Obtaining the same form as that of the Lord
  2. Salokya – One gets to reside in the same planet as that of the supreme Lord
  3. Sarsti – One attaining this liberation, acquires the same opulences as the Lord and lives in the Vaikuntha planets.
  4. Samipya – In this kind of liberation one becomes a personal associate of Lord and stay in His direct association.
  5. Sayujya – In this ,one merges with the dazzling effulgence (brahmajyoti) that emits out of the body of the Lord. In other words one tries to become one with the Supreme Lord. This kind of liberation is despised by the devotees who even prefer going to hell instead. The devotees want to serve the Supreme Lord to their heart’s content and in order to become His servant, one needs to maintain his own individuality. In Sayujya mukti, one tries to become one with the Lord, and in the process actually commits an offense at His lotus feet. The subservient form of relationship between the Lord and His devotees is missing in sayujya. The enemies of the Lord like Kamsa, shishupala have attained this kind of liberation.Hence even getting killed by the Lord ,grants one liberation (Sayujya) from this material world.

Purport –
In the Navadvipa Dham mahatmya it has been stated how Lord Jagannatha once revealed to Ramanujacharya (acharya of the Sri sampradaya) that Lord Gauranga is the essence of all the incarnations of the supreme. Contemplating upon Lord Gaurahari, Sri Ramanujacharya became overwhelmed with ecstatic emotions and immediately wanted to set out and preach the glories of the golden avatara all over the world. Lord Jagannatha then stopped him saying :

‘Gaura-leela ati gudha rakhibe gopane, se leelara aprakate pabe sarva jane’

Please keep the glories of Lord Gauranga’s pastimes a secret for now. When Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu disappears from this world, the whole world will receive the treasure of Lord Gauranga’s glorious pastimes.

Lord Jagannatha reveals the supreme position of Lord Chaitanya in the below verse :

Vaikuntha upari sthan, Goloka yahara nama
Sri Gaurasundara tahe raja
Lakhimi adika naari, eki Purusa Hari
Sukhomoy sakala paraja
(Chaitanya Mangala, 2.494)

(Jagannatha continued) ‘Goloka, which occupies the topmost position in Vaikuntha, is the place where Lord Gauranga is the king.Lakshmi and many other ladies reside there and serve Him. Lord Hari is the only enjoyer over there. All the residents of Goloka are full of bliss’.

Delivering the miseries of people, He shall preach the bliss of pure love of God and thereby deliver the people of Kali yuga’.

Purport –
Let us pray for the causeless mercy of the most munificent incarnation of the Supreme :

premnah saram datum iso ya ekah
Sri Chaitanya naumi devam dayalum
(Chaitanya Chandramrita, Text 4)

Without performing many pious deeds how can one become a devotee of Lord Gauranga ?
